Week 6: Heart of a Teacher
The topic covered by blogger, Rusul Alrubail brings up a topic that is close to her heart. Her occupation as a professor is demanding her to choose. She must either work part time or sessional. This is a decision between 6 hours a week, or over 15.
Rusul is vulnerable in this blog entry, revealing her reaction and thoughts that followed the announcement. Jump over to her post: Higher Education is Pushing More Professors into Poverty to read the nitty gritty details!
If you prefer to stick to this page...spoiler alert! I am going to tell you how the story ends. While thinking about how to make a full time-over time-all the time job work with her family, Rusul concluded that her students deserve to have a better educator than one that cannot give adequate time, talent, thought, and resources to her student's learning.
She could not commit to 'halfway' teaching. I admire her immensely. Further into the blog, she pulls out all the stops, aka the facts.
31% of professors live in poverty and in impoverished conditions.
Rusul makes her audience aware of the situation, how the government has put education on the back-burner. Fabulous. Furthermore, the cuts and sacrifices have all been hush hush. This cannot become the reality. In order to make her opinions known, Rusul declares that she will be present at a standout and day of action.

I sincerely admire Rusul. I admire her convictions of being the best teacher for her students. She knows her capabilities and refuses to be cast on the sidelines. Students deserve the best learning experience. All students. No one deserves to receive half effort work, whether you are the student or the teacher. We are capable of overcoming so many obstacles. Didn't they teach that in school?
